"Operation Flashpoint : Dragon Rising" was scheduled for release next month, but it recently slipped to end of Sept. I'm not bothered by the delay, because you only have to look at the ingame videos to see just how "next gen" and ambitious it's going to be. Go visit the official web site if you want to watch some ingame footage of how the game plays.

ArmA2, (made by the developers of the original OF), looks like it might be released on time, (next month), but the original ArmA1 was released with 9 billion bugs, so I'm not going to buy version 2 until I have read some player reviews, after release.

BF3 is obviously a game we all want to play, but Dice have been busy milking BF2 with new mini games that just use BF2 skins, so development has been delayed.

COD6 has just had a 2 min video released, but there's not much ingame footage in it, so not very informative, but go look at it for yourself if you are curious about the period / story, (just google COD6).

There are a few other games on the horizon that I am keeping an eye on, but in terms of jaw dropping "wow" factor, then OF:DS has the field to itself.

Interestingly there is a new FPS MMO on the horizon. The industry's first and only attempt so far to make such a Holy Grail failed because the game sucked, (the servers all closed a few months ago), but this one is looking a lot more promising, if for no other reason than the development team are 100% gamers themselves, rather than just programmers trying to make a FPS MMO. The new game world setting is also sci-fi, but this time with proper FPS combat, and mature plot / quest story lines, (not go kill 10 womp rats).

for me, all of above would be fine, as long as we all stick to one game and kill the shit of it LOL...
btw,.. does this mean that I will have to buy new gfx card? (I still have my old faithful 8800gt)

Not at all Croigs! Although you may need to by another 7 to go with it, but you can at least keep our old card. :)

Seriously though, I have no idea what the minimum or recomended specs are going to be for either of these games. Any info anyone?

I suspect most of us will be playing on min settings when online, so it shouldn't be a problem. As far as I know the developer has not yet released the specifications for the PC.

That said, if you want to experience a graphics orgasm, then you are going to need a top of the range PC because the draw distance goes way beyond a mile, and it's that draw distance that will cause your PC to feint. That's a bit mind blowing, because the graphics detail is obviously a bit good, the entire game world is consistent and huge, and the entire world is modeled with a realistic physics engine.

For example, I would certainly expect snipers to have to elevate their aim to allow for gravity when doing an extreme long range hail Mary shot. Don't know if they will also have to adjust for wind direction and speed, or if they do, how it may impact multiplayer, (irrelevant if maps are small, an issue if they are huge). Having said that, being a sniper is not going to be that complicated if you are shooting from medium to close range, because gravity and/or wind is not a problem at those ranges, and the developer is going for a BF2 / COD4 fun shooter, so gravity and/or wind should not be an issue. That said, this game is also a military simulator, so it will be very interesting to see exactly which parts of the real world they simulate. Needless to say, the more of the world they simulate, the better the military action will be and the harder your PC will have to work when looking at the horizon. For example if there is wind, then bushes / trees will need to sway. That said, you will obviously be able to limit your draw distance if your PC is having a problem, but as this is cross platform game, any present day medium range PC should be able to play it with ease.

A typical FPS like BF2 and COD4 has a huge number of empty buildings and vehicles you can not enter and use, but in the original OF you could enter and use most things. For example, I once became separated and lost in SP. I found a farm tractor, which I then entered and drove for several miles to reach the nearest road. It was a random vehicle, only had one seat, and I don't think I could drive and shoot at the same time, but if that had been BF2 or COD4 the tractor would have just been an unusable object with a huge / irritating collision screen drawn around it. You certainly could not have entered it, or driven it, or shot out of it. If they were doing that with OF all those years ago, then I confidently expect the real world simulation to be even better these days. Yes, there will be locked doors / unusable vehicles in this game, but there should not be that many. For those of you who never played the original OF, it's difficult to explain what a military simulator is like. Yes, on one level it's obviously just another FPS game, but on another, it's also a simulation of weapons, assets and tactics, and those only work, if the game world itself is simulated as well as it can be.

If you want more info, then go read the official forum.

Thats why I went to Quad Core. I read you will get better details over Dual Core and way better than the consoles. I just hope the 8800 can do the business but as P said, we will be taming the game a little via Low Settings. But this platform is going to be huge if they have done what they are claiming. I think I need to up my RAM and move to Vista or 7 if it has no issues. I doubt 2gb is enough nowadays.
However the MP maps should be smaller surely or it wouldnt be playable. Certainly no bigger than BF2 levels ???

Lets just all go rob a 295GTX and have done with it lol.
